Washer dryer combos that are stacked are by and large the same technology as their stand-alone counterparts, and for that reason, should prove more reliable than the newer all-in-one models, which are not time-tested.

The majority of these models have a smaller capacity than stand-alone versions, and are usually intended for situations where space is at a premium, like apartments, condos, and ships. There are several brands that offer many specialized wash functions, including steam, onboard water heaters, and many water level choices. A drawback common to almost all of these combo washer dryers is the ventless feature of the dryer, which uses the condensation principle to dry clothes. This means longer drying times in all cases.
As for price, the one-piece washer dryer combination is usually cheaper, but if a problem develops in either the washer or dryer, this will almost certainly hinder the operation of the other. Stacked washer dryer combos will almost always be more expensive, but any problems in either unit can be serviced independently.
